In the September issue of the magazine "Surface and Coatings Technology" (Volume 324, 15 September 2017, Pages 201-207) you will soon be able to read the research report "Dual functionality anti-reflection and biocidal coatings".
It is about an anti-reflective and biocidal touchscreen coating developed by English researchers at the University of Salford, UK. The research team has developed a thin dual-function film made of silicon dioxide (AR) and copper oxide (biocide) that not only reduces the transmission of infections, but also improves the readability of touchscreens, which are available to various user groups in public spaces, for example.
Glass with better adhesion
The university team has found that a three-layer structure on glass with silicon dioxide / copper oxide / silicon dioxide has better adhesion and reduced reflection than comparable double coatings. The production is relatively inexpensive with atmospheric printing technology. The film produced was characterized by a number of techniques, including optical spectroscopy, electron microscope, and X-ray fluorescence. The biocidal behavior was tested by determining the kill rate of Escherichia coli.
