What constitutes impact elements that comply with standards

Reproducible results

In standard EN 60068-2-75 the impact elements are precisely defined to ensure exact reproducibility and comparability. The standard specifies exactly which material to use, what the shape of the impact elements should look like and how much each test element weighs.

What types of impact elements are there?

Test elements with different properties

There are 3 types of impact elements:

  • Spring hammer
  • Pendulum hammer
  • Vertical hammer

It is not stipulated which impact element used. The spring hammer is due to its compact design and the relatively low mass only able to test IK01 to IK06. The pendulum hammer and the vertical hammer are only used between IK07 and IK11 due to their high weight.

IMPORTANT

Bullets that only correspond to the correct mass are not standard-compliant impact elements and therefore not permitted for tests according to EN 60068-2-75. There are standards in which steel bullets are specified (e.g. EN60601) but this is explicitly not the case with EN 60068-2-75. The bullet has a different mass diameter ratio as well as a different speed on impact. It cannot be assumed that the same joule number achieves the standard-compliant result if the impact element deviates from the specifications. Especially with bullet diameters that are too small, the impact load is much higher than with correct diameters.
