LG Display Begins Mass Production of 13-inch Tandem OLED Panels for Laptops

LG Display has announced the start of mass production for its new 13-inch Tandem OLED panel designed for laptops. This innovation marks the first time such a panel is being produced for this market.

Introduction of Tandem OLED Technology

The Tandem OLED technology, introduced by LG in 2019, enhances performance and reduces power consumption by using two stacks of red, green, and blue (RGB) organic light-emitting layers. These dual layers increase the panel’s durability, lifespan, and brightness compared to traditional single-layer OLEDs. Initially used in automotive industrial displays, Tandem OLED technology meets high-quality standards by effectively dispersing energy, making it more reliable over extended periods.

Benefits of Tandem OLED Panels for Laptops

Applying this technology to laptops, LG Display’s new 13-inch Tandem OLED panel offers significant benefits. It doubles the lifespan, triples the brightness, and reduces power consumption by up to 40% compared to standard OLED displays. This makes it suitable for both high-performance AI laptops and regular laptops.

Improved Design and Portability

The new panel is also around 40% thinner and 28% lighter than existing OLED laptop screens, contributing to more portable and sleek laptop designs. It supports WQXGA+ (2880x1800) resolution and meets 100% of the DCI-P3 color standard, ensuring vibrant and accurate color reproduction for high-definition content.

Enhanced Display Quality and Touch Performance

Certified as Display HDR True Black 500 by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), the panel can display bright and dark images with enhanced three-dimensionality and realism. The panel also includes an embedded touch sensor for improved touch performance, offering a precise and responsive touch experience.

LG Display’s Commitment to IT Applications

Jae-Won Jang, Vice President and Head of the Medium Display Product Planning Division at LG Display, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing OLED products for IT applications. He highlighted the unique strengths of Tandem OLED, such as long life, high brightness, and low power consumption, as key factors in delivering differentiated customer value.
