Touchscreens, which are used in sensitive areas, such as the medical or military environment as well as in aerospace operations, require a much higher electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) than in other areas. This is the only way to ensure that they do not affect other devices through interference radiation and, in the worst case, that mutual malfunctions occur.
For this reason, many touchscreen manufacturers now offer EMC tests in accordance with the legal requirements for electrical devices. Interelectronix is one of them and uses only very high-quality materials for EMC attenuation. At the European level, Directive 2004/108/EC is usually followed in order to be assigned the appropriate CE marking.
EMC tests
For EMC attenuation, for example, ITO-coated films are used for satisfactory results. If maximum shielding is to be achieved (which is preferred in critical areas), ITO mesh coatings are the first choice. During the EMC tests, the touch screens are examined against radiation in the immediate vicinity. Subsequently, it is determined whether and to what extent the touchscreens themselves emit interference radiation.
